Lewis Fraser started Coverdale Pest Control in 2005 because he wanted to spend more time on the job itself and less time hurrying between calls.

His first job was crawling under porches in Bethel Park to find how mice were getting in, and it taught him to look before he treats. The work he finds most interesting is the puzzle jobs: a wasp nest inside a wall, or ants that keep returning after every spray. Those take patience and tracing the cause.

Most of the work, as he sees it, comes down to finding the entry point and closing it.

The Company

Coverdale Pest Control works out of Bethel Park and covers the communities around it: Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon and South Park. The jobs come from single-family houses, townhomes, rental units and small commercial buildings, and they usually start with something that has become hard to ignore. Scratching in the walls after dark. Droppings behind the stove. A line of ants crossing the kitchen counter, or a wasp nest growing under the porch roof. Sometimes it is small bites that appear overnight, or soft, crumbling wood near the foundation.

The approach has stayed the same since the first jobs. On a mouse problem the first thing checked is where the animals are getting in, often a gap around a pipe or along the foundation, because traps will not hold for long while the opening stays. The same goes for ants that keep coming back and wasps that rebuild in the same spot: the cause gets traced before anything is sprayed.

The work itself covers ant and cockroach treatment, mouse and rat control with exclusion sealing, wasp and hornet nest removal, bed bug treatment, and termite inspection and treatment.

Who Calls

Homeowners make up most of the calls, usually about mice in the fall, ants in the spring and wasps in late summer. Landlords call between tenants, or when one unit’s cockroaches start showing up next door. Small businesses call about the back of the building: storage rooms, kitchens and trash areas, where a problem can grow for weeks before a customer sees anything.

Each of them gets the same start: a look at where the pests live and how they get in, before anything is treated. The puzzle jobs, the ones where an obvious treatment has already failed once, get the most time.
